CASPAR’s Emergency Service Center (ESC) is one of two shelters in Massachusetts that serve actively substance abusing homeless men and women.
The ESC provides 24 hour shelter 365 days a year for substance abusing homeless residents of Cambridge and Somerville with on-site counseling and case management, treatment referral, specialized mental health and medical care, housing search, HIV/AIDS counseling and testing, and crisis stabilization for up to 107 overnight clients. For many, the ESC represents the entrance point to CASPAR’s continuum of substance abuse services. The ESC has strong ties to the community, including hospitals and police forces operating in Cambridge and Somerville, and enjoys a special relationship with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which built the shelter for CASPAR on MIT property in 1994.
